Silver bars offer an affordable way for investors to add to their portfolio without paying a high premium. Bars are popular because they can be easily stacked and stored and come in a variety of weights.
Note: Silver bars may be either new or from a secondary market. Secondary market silver bars simply means they came from another source other than the mint or wholesaler.
Size and Weight
Silver bars come in a variety of sizes and weights including 1 ounce, 5 ounce, 10 ounce, and 100 ounce. The larger weights tend to have less markup because they are easier to produce by the minters, however, smaller weight silver bars are easier to sell off quickly. Many investors will ask “How do I know what is the right size and weight for me?” This is a personal decision that only you can make.
Buffalo Silver Bar
The silver buffalo bar comes in a variety sizes including 1 ounce and 10 ounce bars. Originally created in 1913 by James Earle Fraser for the Buffalo Nickel, the iconic Native American and buffalo images have been utilized and adapted for a variety of other products including rounds and bars.
The front of the bar portrays a profile of a Native American along with weight and purity (0.999 fine silver). On the other side is a grazing buffalo rumored to be Central Park Zoo’s popular “Black Diamond”.
Sunshine Mint Silver Bar
Sunshine Minting Inc. (SMI) is known for creating quality silver products including the Sunshine Silver Round, Buffalo Silver Rounds, and the Sunshine Silver Bar. They also provide a large portion of the silver blanks used by the United States Mint.
The front of the Sunshine Silver Bar depicts the company’s signature silver eagle design, name, weight, and purity (0.999 fine silver). The back is a repetitive pattern of sunbursts.
Generic Silver Bars
“Generic silver bars” simply means, the silver bars could come from a variety of mints and contain either a minted design or a more simplistic cast form. While the origin and appearance of these bars may vary, the silver content and value remains the same.
The price of a silver bar can vary depending on reputation of its producer and limited availability. Generic silver bars can be a good choice for the cost conscious consumer because a generic silver bar may have a slightly lower markup.
